Mind-Body Fitness

What is Mind-Body Fitness?  Simply put, it is any exercise that incorporates an intentional awareness of the body's position in space, breath, alignment, and the contribution of individual muscles to larger movements. The mind carries a present connection to movement throughout the practice.

Over time, this greater awareness of the body carries into all aspects of life, enhancing the ease and confidence that is brought to all activities - work, sports, and leisure. Pilates and yoga are both fitness practices that by their nature incorporate mind-body awareness.

Adding massage therapy to a mind-body fitness practice can greatly improve one's awareness of their body through the connected touch of the therapist. The combination of deep relaxation and touch can create a state of effortless present-mindedness. This awareness of the body-at-rest reinforces the pathway  to mind-body fitness gained through exercise.

STOTT PILATES Method Instruction

I teach a weekly group mat Pilates class at First in Fitness in Berlin, Vermont.  This is a level 1/2 class open to members of the club and the general public. I strive to make classes accessible and challenging to all levels, however Pilates experience is recommended prior to attending class.   Specifically, having completed an Essentials Level series (4 classes) is highly recommended.  For more information on group Pilates instruction, click here.

I also offer private instruction in the Stott Pilates method. Unlike reformer Pilates, the mat method I teach is easily accessible without necessarily having a lot of floor space or equipment.   All you need is enough room to comfortably move around your mat.  Additionally, I can provide small equipment such as bands, rings, and stability balls.

In working one-on-one, my goal is to meet your goals.  There are many reasons people choose private instruction -  to learn the Pilates method before taking a group class, to rehab from an injury, to improve posture, or to challenge an exercise routine.  We will discuss all of your needs and options.

I offer this instruction at First in Fitness (during available hours), or at your home or place of business.

Why I Love Pilates

Pilates is unparalleled, I believe, in providing relief from back pain and stress and moving toward your ideal posture.  It is an extremely effective exercise, whether you are post-rehab, an athlete or an exercise enthusiast.  Pilates will improve all your other movement passions, and even help you feel better in your day-to-day chores like doing dishes or stacking wood.

As an exercise enthusiast and yoga lover myself I had dabbled in mat Pilates over the years here and there. After my second child had turned one, I was able to start taking some Pilates classes more regularly.  And although I didn't have a “back problem”, I found that my back and body in general felt strong and engaged after each class. Even better, I realized I could carry that engagement to the rest of my day-to-day activities and then into my other sports.  It has given me a new understanding of how my body works and how to make it feel even better.

Pilates is a great compliment to my work as a massage therapist and has become prominent in my work in postural analysis.

Starting any new fitness regime, such as Pilates or yoga  can be greatly enhanced by completing a postural analysis.  A postural analysis will give me a clear base line to inform my choice of exercises to use in formatting a private class or class series.

We will talk about how best to modify exercises or postures and incorporate the use of props.  Injury prevention and rehabilitation, balance in the muscular and fascia systems, and increased mobility can be more quickly gained through this initial assessment.

What is the STOTT PILATES™ Method?

The STOTT PILATES™ Method, developed by Moira Stott, builds on the principles of the late Joseph H. Pilates. The Stott method uses modern knowledge of the musculo-skeletal system, and has been refined over two decades with the help of a team of physical therapists, sports medicine, and fitness professionals.

This method is based on modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation – making it one of the safest and most effective methods available.  With a focus on core-stability, including pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization, neutral alignment of the spine, and breathing, this method of exercise  helps restore the natural curves of the spine, relieves tension, and enhances self-confidence.

Core-Flow Yoga Instruction

I teach a group yoga class at the Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Vermont on Mondays at 11am.   This class is open to the general public, as well as members of Club Topnotch and spa-goers.

The class is called "Core-Flow Yoga".  This moderately paced class begins with breath awareness and core-specific exercises to strengthen and bring intention to the musculature in the abdominal area.  The "core" of the body is the area connecting your upper and lower body, including not only the abdominals, but the back, thighs, glutes and pelvic floor.

I will guide you through a dynamic series of postures, linked through sun salutations, to bring strength, stability and length to the body. I incorporate warrior poses, lunges, hip openers, twists, and standing balancing poses to improve your posture, confidence, and ease of movement.  You will leave feeling, calm, confident and well-aligned.

I am also available for private instruction in Hatha Yoga. By "hatha" I mean the physical practice of yoga asanas or poses that we most associate with in the West as yoga.

Starting any new fitness regime, such as Pilates or yoga  can be greatly enhanced by completing a postural analysis.  A postural analysis will give me a clear base line to inform my choice of exercises to use in formatting a private class or class series.

My Path to Yoga

I discovered yoga as a college student in the late 90's , just as yoga was making its way into mainstream western culture.  Being a naturally flexible person who already loved backbends and headstands, I was an eager student, willing to push myself physically, but also loving the inner focus and calm the practice evokes.

It took me some years to find the balance between over-stretching and active lengthening, with some injuries along the way. I have discovered that with sound alignment, and a deeper understanding of how to move from my center with strength and awareness, I can practice safely. This balanced practice allows me to build strength and length in my body, while also encouraging stability in my joints.  This is what I strive to teach in my classes, and to individuals wishing to work with me one on one.
